'Phoonk' is conflict between belief and atheism: Varma

After making 'Sarkar' and 'Sarkar Raj' against the backdrop of underworld and politics, Bollywood director Ramgopal Varma is back to his favourite theme - horror films.

The maker of 'Raat', 'Bhoot' is now coming up with yet another film that will "scare" the audience --'Phoonk'.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, to promote the film, Varma said 'Phoonk' is a conflict between belief and atheism.

Earlier, in a press conference in Aurangabad, Varma has said one can brush off dark forces as superstitions, but realises it when he experiences it.

The film is loosely based on the Telugu novel 'Tulasi Dalam' by popular writer Yandamoori Veerendranath.

"It is not the same story. I was in college when the novel was released and it created a tremendous impact on me," Varma said.

Phoonk is the story of a confirmed atheist whose belief systems are shaken up when his loved ones are subjected to unspeakable horrors by forces whose very existence his rational mind refuses to accept.

"It is also the story of a fanatical devotee who is forced to turn her back on God in the face of traumatic experiences," he said.

When asked that the terror blasts in Ahmedabad resembled a plot in one of his films, he said terrorism is deep-rooted which would not be influenced by a film.

"Anything comes out of human imagination. The differentiation comes how you use it. Terrorism is a deep-rooted cause. Whether it is a pick-pocket or a robber or a terrorist, what matters is your intention," Varma said.

Soha ali khan talks about siddarth

Soha Ali Khan's life seems to have done a turnaround. The city is full of stories of her on-off relationship Siddharth, but the actress laughs it all off. "I'm so amused by all these articles. I'm not admitting or denying anything. But most of what is being written is completely untrue. If it were a controversy regarding my career, I'd react. I wouldn't want to comment on my personal life," Soha, who worked with Siddharth in Rang De Basanti, said. Prodded further, Soha said: "When I get married, I'd owe it to the public to tell them about it. But there's no private life if I talk about it publicly."

What about newspaper reports about her break-up with Siddharth? "Those reports were entirely made up. I think such stories are written in the hope that I'd finally be provoked into reacting. Such reports of a relationship and a break-up are so flagrant they just annoy me," Soha maintained. What about her photograph with Siddharth was published the day after stories of their break-up appeared? "I went with Siddharth and a group of friends to a musical event organised by Sandeep Chowta to cheer three of the greatest musical legends. Rather than cover the legends, the press found it more interesting to photograph me and Siddharth."

Asin bows out of Akshay Kumar's film

It seems South India's Next Best Thing Asin is determined to take her success-quotient to a high a level in Bollywood as it is in Tamil and Telugu cinema. No false moves no slipups for the stunning sensation from the South who is being touted as a blend of Hema Malini and Rekha.

Just recently, Asin gave the nod to three biggies with Aamir Khan (Ghajini), Salman Khan-Ajay Devgan (London Dreams) and last but certainly not the least, Akshay Kumar (Aise Ko Taisa). Now the news is, Asin is out of Priyadarshan's comedy with Akshay Kumar. Reason? According to her polite father, "There's a date clash with the promos of Ghajini."

However, the director Priyadarshan is more forthcoming. "The Akshay film is a three-heroine project. I don't think Asin would be comfortable with that. My producers Venus are looking into the matter of the heroines. We start shooting in November. So we've ample time to find the girls."

As far as Asin is concerned, the signal is loud and clear. This girl is here only to do author-backed central roles. No less.

Mani Ratnam 120 Cr project soon

Kollywood is abuzz with news that ace director Mani Ratnam has signed the biggest ever deal in the history of South Indian cinema, to do a threeversion film in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. His production company Madras Talkies is supposed to be in the final lap of negotiating a whopping Rs 120 crore deal with the Anil Ambani run Reliance Entertainment Big Picture, for all negative rights for three languages. Industry pundits say that if the deal takes place, it will be the biggest for a South Indian film producer and director.

Mani Sir, as he is known in Kollywood (Chennai), has been quietly working on the script of this film since the release of his super hit Guru in January 2007. The elusive director, who never gives interviews, has been keeping a low profile after the demise of his younger brother G Sreenivasan, the moving spirit behind Madras Talkies.

The Hindi version will feature Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Govinda in a negative role. Confirming that he has signed up for the movie, Govinda told TNN: "I am actually doing a film with Mani Sir. Isn't it every actor's dream to work with him? We met recently and I heard about my role, which interested me a lot. It is an intense film and my role will definitely surprise the audiences." Abhishek, who scored his first solo super hit with Guru, is all excited about this new untitled film, for which he has given bulk dates.

The Tamil and Telugu version will have Vikram doing Abhishek's role while Aishwarya Rai will be the common heroine for all the three versions. He is teaming up with his photographer from his early films PC Sreeram, the wizard of lighting in Indian cinema and his own 'discovery' A R Rahman.

Shriya Saran career rocking

Where the sexy Shriya Saran, who appeared opposite Rajnikanth in Sivaji — The Boss last year, is shooting for BT. Some street romeos, unaware that she is already hot property in Bollywood, try to harrow the actress with wolf whistles and comments like, “Sexy ho, Bollywood ki rani ban sakti ho!” Shriya, of course, chews men like them up for breakfast every morning. She replies, “Dum hai na mere main!”

No doubt, the success of Sivaji... and her newfound status as a hot and sensational property in the South has made Shriya confident today. “Sivaji was Rajni’s film, but being a great man, he let me shine in it. Working with him, I learned to set myself a benchmark. Though I often ask myself — where now from here,” the actress admits. Where now, is for Bollywood to tell the talented Southern star.

Riding on Sivaji’s success, she’s bagged several projects, including some from Hollywood. In Bollywood, besides her debut film Awarapan, Shriya’s in Sangeeth Sivan’s Ek. “Films were incidental. I call it an arranged marriage. I fell in love with films after I got into the business. I was grooming to be a Kathak dancer when I landed in a music video. That’s how it began,” she says. On the Hollywood front, Shriya has wrapped up Ashok Amritraj’s The Other End of the Line opposite Canadian actor Jesse Metcalfe. And how has Deepa Mehta’s What’s Cooking to look forward to.

Now that she is in Bollywood, Shriya’s big ambition is to star opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She revealed, “I met him as a fan when I was about 11 and took his autograph. He was shooting in Udaipur for Khuda Gawah. Recently, I met him at an award function in Bangkok and told him that. He was amused. I told Mr Bachchan, ‘I want to work with you.’ And he replied, ‘I’m looking forward to it!’” But she doesn’t really have any favourites in Bollywood. “I am greedy. I want to work with everyone,” Shriya admits candidly.

Aishwarya Rai was Will Smith's first choice

Aishwarya Rai was Will Smith's first choice for Hancock over Oscar-winning Charlize Theron but the actress declined. Smith, who by his own admission is a great fan of Aishwarya, is not disappointed and believes that they will share well on screen chemistry. “I would love to work with Aishwarya. She is gorgeous. I had even offered her roles with me. In fact for Hancock also she was my first preference over Charlize," he revealed.

The actor is still hopeful that would work together in future. "I received denials all the times, may be she had some justified problems. But of course, I will do anything to work with Aishwarya," said a hopeful Smith. "I would love to work in an Indian film. I have seen a couple of Bollywood movies which had impressed me a lot. I also had a word with Karan Johar. Let's see what's there in store," said the actor.

"I love Indian cinema and its actors. Their energy level is just incompatible. The songs and dances in Bollywood movies are just amazing," he added. Ask about his favourite Indian actors: and Smith, who was last seen in the much acclaimed Pursuit of Happyness comes up with a list of top most actors in Bollywood. Of course, Aishwarya figures on top followed by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. "Amitabh Bachchan is a rocking man. Witnessing him and his mania all over India, I too have decided to rename myself to Big W. Shah Rukh Khan is another actor who is a great buzz there," says Smith.

Kerala Telugu Tamil Girl rocking bollywood

Asin is currently making waves all over India. She has paired with Aamir Khan for the movie ‘Ghajini’ and is totally upbeat about the prospects. Reportedly offered many more roles in Hindi Cinema, she brushes aside speculation that she would permanently move to Mumbai.

'I'd like to work in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films and there is no question of sticking with just one language' she said.

She added that no matter what language she is working in, she would make it a point to dub with her own voice. According to her, 'only when the same artiste does the dubbing part will the character gain significance in a perfect manner. I would never let anyone else dub for me'.

Asin is currently in Mumbai and stated very clearly that when she works in Tamil and Telugu movies she'd base herself in Chennai.

Asin's pan-Indian features is fetching her numerous offers in many languages.

Says a smiling Asin, 'I am a girl from Kerala and my first role was in a Telugu film and I played a Tamil girl'. Testimony enough for her pan-Indian appeal.

Telugu film producer asked me to sleep with him

Her maiden film as an actress - Hum Sey Hai Jahaan bombed at the box office, but then pretty, dark and smart Vishakha Singh is not unduly perturbed by the fate of the film for the simple reason that even before Hum Sey Hai Jahaan was complete, she had bagged two more films - Abhijeet Sengupta's Do Aur Do Paanch and Venkatesh Naidu's Coffee Shop, which are also being readied for an early release.

What is Vishakha's take on exposure?

When I saw Esha Deol appear in a skimpy bikini in Dhoom, my heart sank, because I realized that I stood no chance of saying no to getting into a bikini, if Esha who is from the film industry had to do it. I am not at all a prude.

Though I had turned down Arjun Sablok's offer to cast me in Niel N Niki in the role in which he had eventually cast Tanisha, because he could not convince me to expose my cleavage almost throughout the film, I'd readily do a lip to lip kissing scene like Rani did in Black if the scene changes the entire narration like it did in Black."

Is she scared of the syndrome of the casting couch?

Without batting her eye lids, she replies, "I am not scared at all of the casting couch, because I'd slap the person if someone makes an attempt, though I do not deny that it does exist.

A Telugu film producer told me on my face to sleep with him if I wanted to act in his film, but he was lucky because I had politely walked out, since I was new then, long before I bagged the offer for my first film."

Rs 7 crore budget for single song

One song being shot at a cost of Rs. 7 crores. It's a mad mad world, you might think. But that is the truth. Rs. 7 crores are going to be spent on a single song and to think that we once deemed Rs. 1 crore being spent on a single song in Bhaagam Bhag as an excess. The man who featured in Bhaagam Bhag was Akshay Kumar and the one who will feature in this new Rs. 7-crore song will again be Akshay. The song will be part of Akshay Kumar's next release, Singh is Kinng. The movie is complete but for this song, which is soon to be shot in Los Angeles. The song will feature world famous rock star Snoop Dogg along with Akshay. Snoop and his troop are busy planning details of the video at the location and they are reportedly getting something very different ready for the most expensive song in Indian cinema.

While the Singh is Kinng has Rs. 7-crore song there is Kambhakth Ishq which is rumored to have a budget of Rs. 90 crores behind it. Akshay Kumar is certainly getting bigger and bigger. Time will tell whether he can live up to the astronomical sums being spent on his films.

Abishek wants hrithik in sarkar 3

Will Sarkar 3 happen? At the moment, no one knows the answer to this, perhaps not even Ramgopal Verma. But the way Sarkar Raj finishes a sequel seems a distinct and perhaps inevitable possibility. So, with Abhishek out of the picture, leaving Big B to do the job of political king maker once again, what would Sarkar3 be made of? Some would feel that Aishwarya may be the key figure apart from Amitabh in Sarkar 3.

But Abhishek has a different opinion. In an interview he was quoted saying that he would like to see Hrithik in Sarkar 3 if and when it happens. If you have seen Sarkar (the first part) you might know that Subhash Naghre (Big B’s) character had two sons, one Abhishekh and the other played by Kay Kay Menon. Kay Kay Menon’s character had a son (Chikoo) who does not appear in Sarkar Raj.

However at the end of the movie Amitabh does ask his wife to call Chikoo back immediately. That might be where the next Sarkar begins and the way Abhishek sees it, Hrithik would be an exciting choice.

Yuvaraj bowls another bollywood girl

What's up with Yuvraj Singh? After IPL he seems to be in a mood to party and celebrate, but for what? Whatever the reason, the other day we spotted him at a suburban nightspot, flashing his usual infectious smile and dancing away to glory. After sometime his roving eyes caught up with another damsel.

And on closer look, she turned out to be Divya Dutta Rest assured, both were soon caught in a deep animated conversation. What's cooking guys? Maybe they are just good friends. Well that's where everything starts, isn't it? Anyways, we decided to leave the two alone for the rest of the night, hopefully they headed home after their clubbing ended!
